The Two Gentlemen of Verona

Den första texten jag har läst heter The Two Gentlemen of Verona. I kort handlar den om två vänner (Proteus och Valentine) som ger sig ut på resa från Verona till Milano. Proteus lämnar sin älskade, Julia, kvar i Verona. I Milano blir Valentine förälskad i Silvia, som redan är uppvaktad av en Thurio. Även Proteus får känslor för Silvia och för att inte Valentine ska vinna Silvias hjärta går han bakom ryggen på sin vän och hjälper Thurio att förvisa Valentine från staden. Under tiden har Julia klätt ut sig till man och följt efter Proteus som till sin fasa inser vad han är för någon. Silvia är ömsesidigt förälskad i Valentine, som, när Valentine blir förvisad inte vill ta emot varken Thurios eller Proteus försök till uppvaktningar. Hon flyr efter Valentine med Thurio, Proteus och en utklädd Julia inte långt efter. Valentine har slagit följe med ett gäng fredlösa och blivit deras ledare. I skogen tar de Silvia och de efterföljande till fånga och pjäsen slutar med att Valentine får sin Silvia.

Jag var orolig när jag började läsa att jag skulle ha svårt för språket som jag ju faktiskt inte är så van vid. Men jag blev glatt överraskad när jag insåg att jag förstod den övergripande handlingen och även ordlekar som Shakespeare använt i texten. Ett exempel är från akt 2 scen 6 mellan två tjänare:

SPEED
What an ass art thou! I understand thee not.
LANCE
What a block art thou, that thou canst not! My
staff understands me.
SPEED
What thou sayst?
LANCE
Ay, and what I do too. Look thee, I'll but lean,
and my staff under-stands me.
SPEED
It stands under thee indeed.
LANCE
Why, stand-under and under-stand is all one.

Ett annat exempel på en ordlek är mellan Proteus och Speed i akt 1 scen 1:
PROTEUS
Indeed, a sheep doth very often stray,
An if the shepherd be a while away.
SPEED
You conclude that my master is a shepherd, then,
and I a sheep?
PROTEUS
I do.
SPEED
Why then, my horns are his horns, whether I wake
or sleep.
PROTEUS
A silly answer, and fitting well a sheep.
SPEED
This proves me still a sheep.
PROTEUS
True, and thy master a shepherd.
SPEED
Nay, that I can deny by a circumstance.
PROTEUS
It shall go hard but I'll prove it by another.
SPEED
The shepherd seeks the sheep, and not the sheep
the shepherd. But I seek my master, and my master
seeks not me. Therefore I am no sheep.
PROTEUS
The sheep for fodder follow the shepherd, the
shepherd for food follows not the sheep. Thou art for wages
followest thy master, thy master for wages follows not
thee. Therefore thou art a sheep.
SPEED
Such another proof will make me cry 'baa'.
